第八十二课：话说“慢点儿”
刚到中国时我才十八岁，因为年龄小什么也不懂。我有一个毛病，就是一着急心就跳，而且跳得特别厉害。
我想这个毛病跟民族性格有关系吧。在我们国家，人们最爱说的话就是：“快点儿，快点儿！”十八年里，听得最多的也是“快点儿！快点儿！”可以说我是在这句话的催促下长大的。“快点儿”简直成了我们的口头禅。
可是，到中国不久我就发现，很少有人说快点儿，经常听到的却是相反的一句话：“慢点儿！” 我感到奇怪，也不理解。我认为“慢”就是“懒”。于是我想，这儿的人怎么这么“懒”呢？后来发生的一件事改变了我的看法。
那是去年冬天，清华大学的一个朋友打电话叫我去玩，放下电话我就急急忙忙骑上自行车出发了。可是，快到他们学校门口时，车子出了毛病。幸亏附近有一家修车铺，我就把车推了过去。里边的师傅正给一位老人修车。我一进去就喊：“师傅，我的自行车坏了，快点儿给我修修."我一口气说完，修车的师傅只看了我一眼，连话也没说，继续修他的车。我看了看手表，时间不早了，急得不得了。于是就又对师傅说：“你能不能快点儿啊？”这一次他回头看着我说： “别着急，你没看见我正在给别人修车吗？这儿又不是你一个人，总得有个先来后到吧。你稍等一会儿，我给这位先生修完，马上就给你修.”我只好等着。
好容易才等到他给那位先生修完车。他擦着手走过来问我：“到底哪儿坏了？”我告诉他：“骑不动了。”他看了看车，拿起工具，把车胎扒出来，说：“可能是车胎破了。” 打了气就把车胎跑在一盆水里，仔仔细细地检查起来。他的工作又慢又细，还叹了口气，也许很难找到漏气的小孔吧。
我一看他那慢腾腾的样子，就又着急起来：“你怎么这么慢啊，快点儿不行吗？”他忽然停下手中的活儿对我说：“小姐，你已经说了三遍了。我难道不愿意快点儿吗？”我听不明白他说的是什么，只好瞪眼看着他。
他看我生气的样子，就面带笑容地对我说：“你是想让我把你的车修好还是想让我马马虎虎地快点儿把你打发走？”
我这才明白他的意思，不再催他了，而且也学着北京人的腔调说了句：“好吧，你就慢慢来吧！”他把车胎修好了以后，又仔细检查了一下其他部件，然后才满意地对我说：“好了！”当我走出他的车铺时，他又说：“外边下雪了，路滑，要慢点儿骑！”看到一地白雪，听了师傅这句话，我心里立刻感到暖暖的。
后来，我还经常听到“慢点儿走！”“慢点儿来，别着急！”等亲切的话语。我终于明白了，这哪里有教人偷懒的意思呢？明明是亲人般的嘱咐啊！一句“慢点儿”，不仅有做事要认真负责的意思，同时还包含着对别人由衷地关心和爱护。
the 82nd lesson : saying "slower"
when I went to China I was just 18 years old, because I was so young I did not understand everything. I had a failing, even when anxious I wanted to skip ahead, not only skip ahead but become especially talented. I believe that this is a national trait. In my home country people's favorite saying is "quicker quicker!" at 18 to hear the most also to be "quicker quicker". These few words gave me the urge to grow up. "quickly" simply our saying. However, not long after I arrived in China I discovered people seldom say quicker, day to day I listend but the opposite was said, "slower"!
I felt strange and did not understand, I thought "slow" meant "lazy". So I thought, why are the people here lazy? Afterwards something happened to change my view.
Last winter, a friend from Qinghua university telephoned me and asked if I wanted to hang out, as soon as I put the phone down I hastily set out on my bicycle. However when I got to their school entrance my bicycle developed a fault. (Puncture?) fortunatly nearby I found a bicycle repair shop, I took my bicycle there. Inside was an old man repairing a bike. I entered with a shout, "Sir, my bike is broken, quickly I need repairs" I finished my sentence in one breath, the repairman looked at me with one eye, he didn't say anything but continued to repair the bike. I looked at my watch, it wasn't early, I became very worried. As a result I looked at the repairman again and said "are you able to go faster?" This time he lifted his head and looked at me and said "Don't worry, Can't you see I'm in the middle or repairing someone else's bike?
You are not this person, I must first do what comes first. You wait awhile, I must finish repairing this bike, and the I will at once repair yours. I was forced to wait.
With great difficulty I waited till he had repaired the man's bike. He began by asking me, "where is broken" I told him, "It won't move when I ride it". He looked at the bike, picked up a tool, and took off a tyre he said, "perhaps the tire is broken"
He took the tyre to a sink filled with water and carefully began to examine it.
His work was slow and careful, and he sighed, the hole in the tire was difficult to find because it was so small.
I saw how slowly his manner was, and I became worried again, "Why do you go so slowly? could you go faster?" He suddenly stoped his work and faced me as said, "miss, you already said that three times. Could it be that I am unwilling to go quickly? I couldn't believe what he was saying, I could only stare at him. He saw I was angry, smiling at me he said, "You can let me repair it properly, or let me quickly do it so-so and send you away. I understood his mean, I no longer hurried him. but also in a beijing accent said, "okay you go slower". After he had repaired the tire, he scrutinised the other parts, after that was done satisfactory he said "ok". During this time I moved out of his shop. He again spoke. "It's snowing outside. Be careful on the road, ride slowly." I saw white snow on the ground, I listened to the repairman's words, in my heart I straight away felt warm.
After that every day I heard "go slower" "come slower, don't worry" waited for friendly speech(?)I was at last clear, Is the meaning to teach people to be lazy here?
Obviously that is the way my close relatives tell it, the sentence "slower" meaning is to not just to do things but to do them responsibly and seriously, at the same time still include genuine concern for other people
