I picked up a copy of HG Wells book, Food of the Gods for 50 cents at half price books. It was originaly written in 1909, and I have to say it wasn't one of his best! Though there were some enjoyable moments. The plot was a little silly, scientists invented a chemical that would rapidly make anything living grow about 6 times it's normal size, animals, plants, people, and it was incredibly difficult to control. (Or rather infection was very easy). Still as books about scientist experiments going horribly wrong goes this one seemed to be largely in favor of the scientist, even when people were being killed due to the "accidental spillage" of the food, the people who were against it's use often came off as sounding like the ignorant or the misenformed. Wells went to great lengths to make his human giants seem as human as possible, instead of the huge deadly menaces they could have easily been. It was this more human element that made the story more interesting.

That and one particularly interesting scence that seemed straight out of a modern horror story. The two scientist hired this hard ass who had them and a small group of people armed with hunting rifles return to the original farm where a plant, and giant rats and giant bees were waiting to be exterminated. Returning to the house and hunting down the prey and having people taken down one by one, only to suceed in the end seemed very modern.

When trying to find out when this book was written, I found out that the SciFi museum is also currently having a War of the Worlds display, something I would really like to see. I also found out that there were two movies being made, one with speilberg and Tom Cruise which I distrust instantly, and another that claims to be the only authentic adaptation, by which I can hope that they will at least be in England, and that it'll be the turn of the century! Though apparently the production company is here in Seattle, so now I feel a little skeptical, as one thing I really can't stand is American's doing English accents!
