昨天晚上我和我丈夫去饭馆儿。我们吃了西餐。以後我们去咖啡馆。我学我的新教科书。我学第十二棵吃饭。我练习生词和语法。我们九点半回家。我看了书和看了电视。
I had some free time this afternoon and was feeling blah so to cheer myself up I decided to read some of the articles I downloaded ages ago and just got around to printing out a few weeks ago.
The first article I read was by Donald Harper "The Sexual Arts of Ancient China As Described in a Manuscript of the Secound Century BC". Professor Ebrey had told me that Harper was the best historian of early Chinese religion. This probably wasn't the best article of his to read first, scholarly and sexually explicit! But it was interesting to look at the development of esoteric writings, how this gets interpreted today and how archaeological finds are contributing to our knowledge of traditions. The best part for me was when he was looking at some of the obscure language used, and referred to one of the words as being used in a later Tang poem that no one had been able to figure out the reference before. I thought it was neat that there were some pretty interesting implications there.
The secound article I read was by Stephen Teiser, a historian I enjoy quite a bit, entitled simply "Popular Religion". Written in 1995 this article is short and is a basic summary of the "state of the field" as of writing. It discusses literature written from both a historical and anthropological standpoint and is a wonderful source of information on articles for further reading, and current ideas and debates. It made me very happy to realise that I had read many of the works referenced and knew most of the authors already. Definitely an article to keep as even though it's now a little dated, still it contains lots of useful reference material.
