TIME have picked their 100 best English language novels from 1923 to the present.

And HOLY SHIT they inclueded ALAN MOORE! The Watchman, which in my opinion is no where near as nice as V for Vendetta. But I think that might partly be because of the Magic Faraway Tree references.

How many and what have you read?

I'd read not all that many, having mostly read sci-fi and fantasy novels as a teenager. And now I've started to read more normal books they tend not to be written since 1923! (Which seems like a random date but now I'm thinking about it it's probably when TIME started as it includes their original reviews of the books.)

But anyway the ones I've read are:

The watchman Alan Moore, HORRAY for Alan Moore!

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold (1964) John le Carre Which know I'm doubting and may have only read other JLC novels.

Snow Crash (1992) Neal Stephenson though I prefered the diamond age

Slaughterhouse-Five (1969) Kurt Vonnegut Loved!

1984 (1948) George Orwell Which I enjoyed but was a bit dissapointed that it didn't help me understand Diamond Dogs any better

Neuromancer (1984) William Gibson The bit where Molly tells the story of Johnny Nemonic always gets me

The Lord of the Rings (1954) J.R.R. Tolkien though I thought it was TERRIBLE

Lord of the Flies (1955) William Golding Also hated

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) C.S. Lewis though not my favorite in the series, that was Magicians Nephew, I loved the dying world

A Handful of Dust (1934) Evelyn Waugh recently discovered thanks to Stephen Fry and know one of my favorite authors

The Great Gatsby (1925) F. Scott Fitzgerald which i read in high school and just remember being disapointed by as it didn't seem decedant enough to me

Gravity's Rainbow (1973) Thomas Pynchon I tried to read but only got about 40 pages in or soemthing as I did find it unreadable.

The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) John Fowles which now I do remember a bit better but think I should re-read it

Brideshead Revisited (1946) Evelyn Waugh, The first half of this book is one of the best most heartbreaking things I've ever read, the doomed gay romance as he has to battle his friends alcholism is phenomenal, unfortunatly the second half suffers from Waugh's new found catholicism.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (1970) Judy Blume, Which I read after moving to the states the first time, but was always puzzled when I saw it in the library to start with as I always read the title as "are you their god". Grammar never being one of my strong points!

So only 15 great works of 20th century literature and 2 are by the same author!
