When Wu Zetian was about to proclaim herself Emperor the Buddhists presented her with a Commentary on the Great Cloud Sutra that said she was destined to be the King of the whole world, and clearly should be the proper emperor. The Great Cloud sutra refers to a princess of a small kindom in Southern India who was to rule in the place of her father 700 years after the Buddha's death. Clearly the monk commentators had to reach far and wide to get this to apply to Wu Zetian. But my favorite comment about the difference in time and place was the statement, "it is a matter of esoteric teaching" (Guisso 1978:212). The only thing I could think of was Father Ted training Father Jack for the arrival of the Bishops by teaching him to say, "that would be an ecumenical matter". I'm sure one or two of those monks cried out "酒!" in their time.
