Yesterday I came across this lovely book from 1825 The Footman's Directory and Butler's Remembrancer or The Advice of Onesimus to his young
friends..and advice respecting behavior to superiors
tradespeople and fellow-servants.

It contained lots of helpful advice on how to be a good servant, (manservant) and how to set the table properly and polish shoes etc. It also had these great recipies,

Excellent substitute for Table Beer
In warm weather more table beer is wasted, by turning
sour, than is drunk. The following mixture will be
found a cheap and agreeable substitute for it. To ten
quarts of water put a bpttle of porter and a pound of
brown sugar or treacle: add a spoonful of powdered
ginger if the flavour of it be approved. When the
whole is well mixed together put it into bottles, cork
them loosley, place them in a cool cellar, and in two
or three days it will be fit to drink.

To try the goodness of spirits
Set fire to some in a spoon; if good it will burn
brightly away without leaving any moisture behind.

To make toast and water
Take a thin slice of stale bread, toast it a deep
brown on both sides, but do not burn or blacken it;
put it into a deep jug and fill it with boiling water,
cover it and let it stand untill cold. Some prefer
cold water in which case somewhat more time for it to
stand is necessary. Always inquire which is most
agreeable, and let it be strained through a fine and
clean sieve, before you take it upstairs.

The Toast and water is frightening! Are you supposed to drink toast flavoured water or consume the puffed up toast? I've never heard of this before.

After this lovely book I had to retrieve a book with men having sex, (as anti-aids promotion) and then a book on medieval monsters.

Today's been really busy so will have to write later about my finds today.
