Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd was voted in (unanimously) as this month's [livejournal.com profile] bibliogoth book. It's easily one of the best novels I've read in ages. I found it genuinely disturbing, though I don't read horror books. But I was sold from the first chapter when the main character got boarded into his parents house while they died of the plague. The interconnections between the 18th century and modern London worked very well. I thought it was truly the 18th century part of the novel that stood out. Ackroyd seemed to have perfectly captured the contrasting viewpoints of the enlightenment, superstition and science. I honestly felt I was missing parts of what was happening, and may have to go back and read it again, though probably not until after the meeting, as I'd really like to hear other people's opinions about what the heck was going on, and particularly what the end meant! Still Brilliant book, definitely recommended to anyone interested in London's history. (and a good scare).
