I know I'm rather slow to jump on the bandwagon here, but I finally have been able to get a hold of some cheap copies of these books and just started reading them. I have to say I am loving them to pieces. I love the way they are written and how everything is so very terrible. The first three were spoiled a little for having seen the film first, but the authors style, and the hints about Beatrice more than made up for the image of Jim Carey that was so difficult to get out of my mind.

The Miserable Mill I enjoyed as it seemed to be taking a slight break from the standard plot, and life seemed extra hard for them. The Austere Academy was great, such a nice contrast to another children's boarding school book series I may have read recently... I liked the new orphans, especially due to the fact that they were responsible for the reference to Sappho and Dorothy Parker! I finished The Ersatz Elevator on the way into work this morning (bless the tube strike). I thought it didn't seem quite horrid enough, the large apartment seemed a bit too cushy, but I did really like the horrid dark, and the trips down the elevator shaft, and overall enjoyed it quite a bit.

I can't wait to read the rest.
