I had to translate the following passage. I think I got the jist of just about everything, except the first paragraph 2nd sentence still seems a bit odd.

Singapore has opened a Calligraphy Centre for older people. Every Saturday morning this calligraphy center located in the city streets, a group of people in their fifties and older practice calligraphy, but this is not an ordinary calligraphy class, this is the older people’s calligraphy university.

This is South East Asia’s first older people’s calligraphy university (afterwards abbreviated to “shu da” literally book big). Classes started in February of this year. The teacher, Li said, The students are very serious about their study. The Calligraphy students average age is around 55, most are retired. Students often visit calligraphy exhibitions and there is a student exchange for all parts of the region. Shu Da’s course takes 3 years altogether.

Every week class meets for 3 hours. Tuition every year is 2400 Singapore Dollars. Last October was the first time to enroll new students,the response was overwhelming, applications came from more than 50 people, 5 times the original number of openings for the prospective students. Afterwards in order to deal with the requirement the number of students was increased to 20.
