The Satyricon by Petronyus

beluosus bought me this as one of my Christmas presents. (And we subsequently managed to get it picked for this month's bibliogoth book - Convenient!) He thought I'd like it as it was a Roman On the Road. And I have to say I enjoyed it very much. I didn't think it was quite On the Road, as these people clearly had far more Money than Sal, but then they also suffered far worse punishments!!! In some ways I loved it for the same reasons I enjoy Torchwood, being that everyone was without matter of comment, bisexual.

It was lots of fun to read about everyone's sexual escapades. I loved the two married women's flirting. She complaining about her duties as a matron, she complaining that her husband just liked to fuck his boy. I think the translation I read was very good, it was quite common in places and you really felt like you were reading about real people doing real things. (Sometimes with a little more detail than may have been strictly necessary!) It gave me a much greater appreciation for the Romans. I just wish it hadn't been quite so fragmentary, as I would so love to be able to read the whole thing. As it was the fragments made it seem rather like a hallucinatory dream. Which given the subject matter wasn't too bad. Definitely one I'd recommend!
