Today in class Professor Ebrey showed up a slide show of T'ang and Song art. It was wonderful and made up for the lack of representation of that period at the Asian Art Museum in San Fransisco. Their was a wonderful scroll painting that was 50 feet long that she had about 20 slides of a very detailed visit to Kaifeng.
But the best painting was of these three figures, two obviously female, the middle with a female's head dressed up in men's clothing. Apparently in the Tang women could dress up as men, as a kind of game. (I think she said) Though by the Song such things were frowned upon. Cross dressing seems to be so ubiquitous in Hong Kong period movies. I just want to know what the historical roots are. I think it's really cool to she that happening 1300 years ago. And that someone thought it was worth painting a picture about.
